A boulder opal this size, with this depth of color, is a rare find on its own. Boulder opal forms only in ironstone from a narrow band of deposits in Queensland, Australia, and unlike solid opal, most of what's mined comes in thin, fragile seams — a piece large enough to anchor a buckle, holding this much play of electric blue and violet against its natural brown ironstone host, is genuinely uncommon at any price point today.
The ironstone backing is left exposed by design — it's part of the stone's structure, not a flaw, and it's what gives boulder opal its strength and durability compared to more fragile solid opal. Hand-set in sterling silver with a hand-textured, hammered border, mounted on an adjustable leather strap.
