For more than two decades, Made Design Jewelry has been a hands-on studio practice. We choose natural stones for what makes them individual, then fabricate the jewelry around the material rather than designing a standardized setting first.
Why we make this way
The material is not decoration. It is the beginning.
A natural stone already carries a history before it reaches our bench: pressure, mineral growth, fracture, color, matrix, crystal structure and time. Our job is to make a piece that gives those qualities a clear place to live.
That is why our work can move between a small everyday ring and a large one-of-one cuff without losing its identity. We are not trying to make every stone look the same. We are looking for the right relationship between the material, the metal and the person who will wear it.
Some stones arrive highly polished and precise. Others are raw, geode-like, fossilized, included or irregular. We work with diamonds, pearls, sapphires, rubies, tourmalines, opals, quartz, geodes, fossils, amethyst, turquoise and unusual found or vintage material when it has the right character.
Designed from the stone outward
Instead of beginning with a mold and searching for something to fit it, we study each stone's face, depth, weight, edges and natural movement. From there we determine how much metal it needs, how it should sit on the body, and whether the setting should disappear visually or become part of the design.
At the bench
One piece at a time.
Build
Metal is formed, cut, soldered and shaped around the actual stone. Proportion is worked out at the bench, not imposed by a standard mold.
Set
Bezels, prongs and structural details are adjusted by hand so the setting supports the material and the way the piece will be worn.
Finish
Surfaces are polished, brushed or oxidized as the piece requires. Every object is inspected and finished by hand before leaving the studio.
Material language
Character over uniformity.
Our material choices are intentionally broad, but the standard is consistent: the stone or object must have enough identity to justify building around it. Metal is chosen for wearability, structure and the finish the design needs.
Natural variation
Matrix, inclusions, crystal growth, fire, color zoning and unusual cuts are treated as design information rather than flaws to hide.
Made for wear
We work with sterling silver, oxidized silver, gold-filled and fine-jewelry metals. Our studio approach avoids nickel, lead and zinc in the jewelry metals we specify.
Beyond conventional gems
Fossils, geodes, shark teeth and select vintage or found artifacts can become the center of a piece when their form carries the design.
The hand stays visible
Hammering, oxidized recesses, polished edges and hand-built settings are used deliberately. We do not try to erase every sign that a piece was made.
One of one
Variation is part of the design.
No two natural stones are exactly alike, and much of our work is intentionally made once. Even when a construction returns, the proportions and surface change with the material. The Archive keeps sold and retired pieces visible because that history is part of the studio's design language.

Made Design Jewelry began in Los Angeles in the early 2000s and has grown through travel, stone sourcing, long-term customer relationships and a lasting retail presence in Japan.
