Gold-filled

Gold-filled jewelry uses a mechanically bonded layer of gold over a core metal. It is more durable than a thin plated finish, but friction, chemicals, salt water, chlorine, perfume and repeated abrasion can shorten the life of the surface. Wipe with a soft cloth after wear and store dry.

Gold vermeil

Gold vermeil is gold applied over sterling silver. Because the gold is a surface layer, treat it gently: avoid abrasive polishing compounds, chlorine, perfume and prolonged moisture. Clean with a very soft cloth and mild soap only when necessary.

Solid gold

Solid gold jewelry can be cleaned with mild soap, lukewarm water and a soft brush when the stones set in the piece are compatible with that method. Dry thoroughly and store pieces separately to reduce scratching.

Sterling silver

Sterling silver naturally tarnishes with exposure to air, moisture and chemicals. Store it dry and use a polishing cloth intended for sterling silver. Oxidized finishes should not be aggressively polished because the darkened detail is intentional.

Platinum

Platinum is naturally white and develops a surface patina with wear. Clean gently with mild soap and water when the stones allow it. Professional refinishing can restore a brighter polish if desired.

Brass

Brass can darken or develop a patina with wear and exposure to moisture. Keep it dry, wipe it after wear and use a brass-safe polish only when a brighter finish is desired.

Natural stones

Stone care depends on the individual material. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaning unless the specific stone is known to tolerate it. Opals, emeralds, pearls and many included or treated stones require gentler care than diamonds or quartz. When in doubt, use a soft dry cloth and contact the studio before using a cleaner.

General care

Remove jewelry before swimming, bathing, heavy exercise or household cleaning. Put jewelry on after lotions, fragrance and hair products have dried. Store pieces separately so stones and metal surfaces do not rub against one another.
